Scalloped Hem

Draw the basic 4 panel skirt pattern. Draw the radial lines from the corner to the dots at the edge of the arc. This will divide the pattern in 8 sections. You can stop here or divide each of the sections again to make 8 sections.

Find a round object like a lid or a plate that fits between the lines and makes the scallop shape you want. Consider a square corner for a saw toothed effect.

Draw a line about one inch above the points of the scallops. This will be the cutting line for the hem facing.

Lay another smaller piece of pattern paper over the scallops and the hem cutting line. Trace these lines. This is the pattern for the hem facing. Make sure you copy the seam allowances on the facing pattern.

Sew the side seams of the skirt and the hem facing. Place the hem facing on the skirt right sides together. Off set the seam allowances so there is less bulk.

Note: If the hem facing is backed with light interfacing such as Pellon 906F it will look  crisper longer.

Sew the scallops with a ¼ inch seam and a 2.5 mm stitch length. Pivot at the points and clip the seam allowance up, to but not through the stitching.

Turn the scallops right side out and press. A point turner will help get the edge to turn. Use glue stick, to help hold the facing in place until it is stitched.

You can top stitch around the edges of scallops.
